America's Crisis: The Death of Masculinity (Part 1)

The recent "Million Man" march in our nation's Capitol and the growing "Promise Keepers" movement reflect an increased awareness of a crisis which has existed in America for a great while. There are reasons for doubting that either of these efforts will have any substantial impact upon the crisis: but they are voices pointing to us with some urgency to the seriousness of the crisis.

This crisis is due to the massacre of true masculinity in our nation. There are many agents at work in this massacre: estrangement from God; despising of truth and righteousness; lack of careful parental discipline; absence of role models; self-absorption; childish pursuits after pleasure; certain social injustices; radical feminism. Masculinity, not to be confused with machismo, has many enemies and those enemies are winning. That is not true only within minority communities, it is true in our society as a whole. Moreover, this ongoing massacre is subversive to the viability of our culture. Despite all the vacuous but emotionally charged claims to the contrary, no society survives apart from strong, principled male leadership. God sovereignly created, designated, and equipped the man as His representative in the order of the human community. Though the woman is wonderfully unique, often superior to the man in wisdom and virtue, and occupies her own role of irreplaceable importance, nonetheless, the woman cannot and will not successfully occupy the Divinely appointed role of male leadership. Even if she must try to lead due to male default, as too often occurs within families, there will be serious negative consequences due to the absence of strong male leadership.

All of us grow weary of naysayers, prophets of doom predicting the inevitable collapse of homeland. No American in his right mind wants America to fail. However, we have huge, potentially fatal problems. The way of survival and triumph surely cannot be that of ignoring reality, wishing away crises, or entertaining the naive presumption that the American spirit has always emerged victorious and always will. That is sheer folly. The American spirit itself is in ICU. The situation is critical. It is time to pull our heads out of the sand, cast aside our unrealistic optimism, summon the courage to confront the minority of zealots who are sabotaging our nation by their own selfish, unprincipled movements, and assert ourselves for truth and right. And there are few if any national crises of greater urgency than the erosion of true masculinity and masculine leaders.

In an effort toward making some small contribution toward the halting of this crisis, this is the first of what we pray will become a series of Bible-based treatments of this subject. Please, you who fear God, pray that Christ will impart wisdom in the writing and blessing in the reading of this series. Any assistance which you can provide to encourage that reading of these articles will be greatly appreciated and hopefully will be used by God for His glory and the common good.
