Why Did He Come?

Having just passed through the Easter season, we would do well to ponder the historical events marked by this season. The most remarkable happenings in the history of the world occurred with the incarnate coming, living, dying, and living again of Jesus Christ. How do we measure the significance of God becoming man and dying under His own wrath in order to deliver mankind from the justly deserved experience of that wrath?

One of the questions which most presses upon our minds in the regard is, why? Why would God do this? It was so humiliating, so far below His dignity and stature as the all-glorious God and Creator of the universe.

The answer has to do with horrible reality of sin in His world and in the human race specifically. Scripture is very clear on this point:

Matthew 1:21 - "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

1 Timothy 1:15 - "This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief."

Sin is man's greatest enemy. In our culture we have worked hard to ignore sin or to explain it away. We may have somewhat pacified ourselves but we have done nothing to make sin more agreeable to God. Sin is a transgression of God's character and will. Sin is defiance against God. Sin moves God against individuals and nations. Sin is the cause of death in the world and is ultimately responsible for everything leading to death: violence, war, disease, even aging. Were it not for sin none of these things would be apart of human experience -- Romans 5:12 - "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned."

On the level of daily trial, much of the pain we face is due either to our own sin or to the sins of others. Take for instance the pain of conflict with other people. It is sin which makes for marital tension and divorce. It is sin which pits children against their parents and parents against their children. Strife and jealousy and gossip in the workplace and in the school—it is all the work of sin.

How human beings should hate sin! But even if we assume a correct attitude toward sin, what can we do to satisfy God for the sins we have committed? What can we do to conquer the rule of sin within ourselves? Sin is too much apart of us, even if we are successful in dealing with certain sinful habits what can we do about the much more serious sins of pride and selfishness and ungodliness that are woven into the very fabric of our souls?

That is why God became man; namely, to save us from our sins. Far too many people refuse to admit that they have a sin problem. Yet, sin is destroying them and their relationships and, most of all, is making them the targets of God's inescapable wrath. There is no other power sufficient to deliver us from sin's guilt, condemnation, and dominion except the Lord Jesus Christ. If you recognize that you need deliverance from sin, call upon Christ. He will deliver you! If we can be of service to you, please call us.
